PR CEOs Agree Ethics, Transparency Key to Successful Communications
Recently, Aedhmar Hynes was invited by PR Week editor-in-chief Steve Barrett to join a handful of other PR agency CEOs in a roundtable discussion on issues affecting the communications industry.
As these leaders looked ahead to the future of the industry, they all agreed – the road ahead is paved for success, not just because of the way social media and digital tools have evolved the way we build relationships, but because of the changes happening in society. A corporation’s greatest asset is its reputation – and in a world where transparency is of utmost importance to the social consumer and other stakeholders, communications is in a strong position to lead the way.
Further to the discussion on transparency is the question of how, if at all, we ensure that we’re building a reputation for PR as an industry. Do we “PR the PR?” Rather, the focus should be on great communications as it supports business goals – showcasing the success of brands in terms of their reputation, rather than highlighting the PR work that supports it. As communicators, it’s our job to be the standard barriers for reputation and transparency, and making sure that’s what the communications industry is all about.
Check out the video below for Aedhmar’s takeaways from the discussion – and be on the lookout for the March issue of PR Week for more details from the roundtable.

Does Your Smartphone Stress You Out?
A work colleague shared an interesting article last week on the use of smartphones andtheir impact on stress levels. The article was based on a study by the British Psychological Society that found a link between stress levels and the number of times a person picks up their smartphone to check messages and mail. The result of the study can be read on their site.Who has not fallen victim to the “phantom vibration” from their phone when it actually didn’t ring? Are we all becoming addicts to our smartphones? I’m afraid the answer is clear – yes, we are. If “smartphone addiction” sounds like something you suffer from, here are a few helpful tips for smarter use. Read more…
What’s New in the Tumblr’hood?
Awhile back, we rounded up how microblogging platform Tumblr is a quickly emerging force for brands looking to up and/or solidify their digital profiles. But beyond that, it’s grown to become an invaluable tool for connecting with audiences beyond a brand name, and showcasing some personality. I myself can attest just how influential it can be in showcasing said brand personality – one stumble upon the NYC office’s Tumblr during my New York City job search last October, and I basically knew that I must work here. Despite having already combed through HyperText for a more informative, dialogue-engaging “corporate” consciousness, Tumblr shed light for me on the NYC office’s work culture and character – things that made their employees think, laugh, common interests we shared. It presented me with that cool, personable touch that could only be delivered through the casual, simple format that Tumblr offers. What is it about this rapidly expanding microblogging tool, oft-referenced as the blog counterpart of Twitter? Read more…
The Rise of Content in Communications
There’s been a lot of debate over the future of PR. From PRSA’s #PRDefined initiative focused on revitalizing the definition of PR, to the evolving role of communications professionals and agencies. Historically, “traditional PR” has been heavily defined by media relations. And while media relations remains important, the industry is increasingly seeing our function becoming something much bigger. PR’s success focuses on building companies’ brands and growing their businesses – using storytelling and compelling messages to communicate to the people your company wants to influence, and ultimately influencing their behavior. Celebrating #CMAD – A Video With Our Community Manager
Today marks the third annual Community Manager Appreciation Day since Jeremiah Owyang first coined it as the fourth Monday of January back in 2010. In celebration, we wanted to share the video below. We sat down with our community manager, Amber Rinehard, just before the new year to get her thoughts on how the community manager role evolved in 2011, what she sees for the future and what she considers the three most important qualities in a successful community manager. Watch the video…
