hello David - a great article with plenty of good points.
I must say that I was the first one to be surprised by the crazy coverage around Second Life 2 years ago. And we can say that most of the people who wrote about Second Life didn't actually connected to the universe.
As a result, I understand the mistrust Linden Lab could have now regarding external media, focusing into their community.
Since the beginning, Second Life is all about community (99% of Second Life has been created by its community).

Second Life (or at least 3D virtual universe) are really 10 years too early - but remains a fantastic lab for experiment of tomorrow's collaboration and communication within communities. No doubt we'll hear about virtual universe pretty soon :)

Good stuff David -- love that you worked a Springsteen metaphor in there.

Today's viral environment leads to consumers jumping from one hype bubble to the next, a constant search for the next big thing. But this isn't a sustainable way to interact and does not place value on loyalty or consistency of experience and will lead to brand burnout. I agree with your point that instead of pushing for huge peaks (with an inevitable dropoff), we should aim to drive consistency and quality interaction to remain in the conversation long-term. What brands do you think are doing this well?

Joe, you make a good point about outcome vs. output! However, unfortunately output is too often the only thing some clients are willing to pay for. So the "paranoid enough" thought is not only important for agencies, but is also applicable to companies who are reluctant or who refuse to open up the box of new PR goodies available to see what, if nothing else, their competitors are using to benchmark effectiveness.
